    • American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
      Independent certification organization with headquarters based in the United States. They test the technical competence of products to the applicable national and international standards, ABS rules and industry guidlines. ABS, together with Lloyd's Register and DNV GL, is one of the three most important certification bodies.

    • Beveling
      Machining steel in such a way that a tapering from thick to thin steel is created. We call this a bevel. These often have a small angle. Application: eg in shipbuilding.

    • Carbon steel (quarto) plates
      A quarto plate is a hot-rolled plate which is produced by a rolling installation with four rolls. Because of its thickness the plate cannot be rolled up. This in contrast to coil. There is an overlap between quarto plate and coil for thicknesses up to 15 to 20 mm.
    • Certificate
      A certificate is a test report. Depending on the quality, there is a 3.1 or 3.2 certificate available. The 3.1 certificate states: material quality, material standard, heat and test number, mechanical properties and chemical composition. The 3.2 certificate contains the same information as the 3.1 certificate. The difference is that in 3.2 production and certification is supervised by an independent official body. Such as: Lloyd's Register (LR) and Det Norkse Veritas - Germanischer Lloyd (DNV-GL).

    • Deburring
      To remove protusions from a sharp edge or surface. Done manually or automatically.
    • Dillidur 450
      A wear resistant steel with an avarage hardness of 450 HBW. This is obtained by quenching of the material during production. Dillidur 450 is meanly applied when an elevated wear-resistance and also good workability (especially good weldability) of the material are necessary. Dillidur 450 is for example used in earth moving and loading machines and dredgers.
    • Dillimax 690E
      High strength construction steel. A fine grained stuctural steel is made by quenching and tempering the material in production. This steel is stronger than for example S355J2+N. Therefore, it is possible to construct more lightly. Dillimax is for example used in cranes, bridges and flood gates. E = Extra tough with minimum impact values at a test temperature of -60°C.
    • Dillimax 690T
      High strength construction steel. A fine grained stuctural steel is made by quenching and tempering the material in production. This steel is stronger than for example S355J2+N. Therefore, it is possible to construct more lightly. Dillimax is for example used in cranes, bridges and flood gates. T = Tough with minimum impact values at a test temperature of -40°C.

    • FPC.EN1090
      Fabrication Production Control Certificate based on EN1090. AWS is licenced to apply a CE marking to the products and issue the related DoP (Declaration of Performance) as well. AWS is certified for the highest execution class 4 (EXC 4).

    • Heat Treatment
      A heat treatment is used for the hardening of an alloy. This is first brought above a certain temperature, and then cooled rapidly in such a way that martensite (= a very hard, brittle appearance of steel, in which the iron atoms are highly strained body-centered and tetragonal) is formed. This stage is very hard due to the many internal stresses that are inside the material.

    • Impact test - Charpy V
      The impact test is a standardized method to predict the steels sensitivety for a brittle fracture. First the pendulum drops without a test piece from its rest position and swings up to a certain height. This measures the loss of energy caused by friction in the construction. After that the test piece is placed into the path of the pendulum and is broken. The upsurge height will be less because the test rod absorbs energy until it breaks. From most machines you can read the fracture energy in kilopondmeter. Now it is possible determine the impact strength as the fracture energy of the cross section of the rod. The notch value is defined as the breaking energy per unit cross-section of the test bar at the height of the notch. In European standards, 4 temperatures have been established for these tests being carried out: + 20 °, 0 ° C, -20 ° or -40 °.

      ISO 9001 is a standard that sets requirements for the quality management of an organization. An external, independent party (a certification body) audits the organization and determines whether the quality management system of the organization meets all the standard requirements.     • Oxy-fuel gas cutting
      Thermal cutting. Materials are cut by combustion. It uses a combination of combustible gas and oxygen. The material that is cut is heated first, after which the oxygen causes the combustion to continue uninterruptedly. It is actually a chemical oxidation process. AWS has 5 CNC-controlled oxy-fuel gas cutting machines with 8 torches and a cutting thickness of up to 350 mm and 1 machine with an inkjet marking head.

    • Pig iron
      There is no iron in its pure form in nature. It is packed in iron ores. In a blast furnace the iron ore is heated, whereby the hot liquid pig iron flows down and is collected. Pig iron is brittle because of a relatively high proportion of carbon. Therefore unsuitable for futher processing. It must be cleaned first.
    • Plasma cutting
      Cutting by melting. The steel is cut using plasma. The plasma is generated by an electric arc. The electric charge causes the gas to ionize partially. During this process, the gas passes into plasma with a possible temperature up to 30,000 ° C. The high temperatures cause the steel to melt and parts even sublimate. AWS features 2 HD plasma cutting machines with 1 or 2 torches with cutting thicknesses of up to 20 mm or 50 mm with a 40 meters in length cutting bed.

    • Re-stamping / Authorized to re-stamp
      Tracebillity is secured through re-stamping. AWS is authorized for 3.2 certified materials. We know how to deal with exeptions and re-stamping on location under supervision of a third body of re-certification with confirmation of an inspection authority belongs to the possiblilities as well.

      Hot-rolled structural steel. The letter S (S = Structural), followed by a number which indicates the yield strength (in this case 355).       Hot-rolled structural steel. The letter S (S = Structural), followed by a number which indicates the yield strength (in this case 355).     • Steel
      Steel is the generic name for iron-carbon alloys that are good malleable and contain a limited amount of carbon. Besides iron and carbon, steel contains other (remaining) element. Sometimes these were deliberately added in order to influence the properties of the steel, sometimes they are impurities that are naturally present.
    • Structural steel
      By far the most common steel. Structural steel is not or weakly alloyed and has a low carbon content. The description of hot-rolled structural steel starts with the letter S (S=sturctural), followed by a number indication the yieldstrength. P.e. S235, S355.
    • Surface treatments
      Additional treatments such as blasting, protecting, metalizing, applying wet coating, powdercoating or fire-retardant coatings. Delivery according to NEN EN 1090 (EXC 4) is possible at AWS.
  • T
    • Tensil tests
      A steel rod with a fixed and standardized size and shape, is subjected to tensile force until it breaks. At first the rod will stretch elastically. At some point the tension is so high, that the deformation is pemanent. At that moment the yield strenght of the material is exceeded. When the tensile force is further increased the moment will be reached that the rod shows a constriction. The tensile stress in the constricted cross-section will rapidly increase and the rod will break. The tensile strength is the maximimun tension force the rod can withstand till the moment of constriction. This maximum tensile force, divided by the original diameter is called the tensile strength.
    • Track and trace
      AWS has digital tracking en tracing where we select and pick the right plate by using barcodes. This improves speed and ensures 100% traceability both in paperwork/ordersystem and in re-stamping of cut parts.
  • W
    • Weld seam preparation
      For a good weld, cut steel is often prepared with a bevel. This is an oblique side that is applied on a flat plate. Possible weld preparations: V, Y, X or K-welds. The main reason of a bevel is to strengthen the welded construction.
